Melissa, do you think what the Slambook said was true? About Aiden, I mean. I don't know if I really believe it - after all, it wasn't that long ago that someone in there said Stan Shunpike fancied me - but at least if it's just a stupid rumour, it's more flattering than that one. It's just - I guess if it's true, then I simply never noticed. I'm not very perceptive about those kinds of things, I'm sure you know.

It'd be kind of nice if it were true, though, yes?

I've been looking at the music in the musical, and it's really fantastic. Really challenging, too. I'm not quite sure I wish I were singing more of it. The show is actually quite well-written - I've looked at some other Muggle musicals, and not all of them are really all that good. Or, well, I suppose the better word is sophisticated. They aren't always so sophisticated. This one has a very complex story, complex music... it's kind of exciting!

Also, there's another Quidditch match this weekend, isn't there? I think I heard some second-years talking about it this afternoon. I don't think Ravenclaw's playing, though. Too bad! Hufflepuff and Slytherin, is it? That will be... interesting. I don't know how Hufflepuff is going to handle having a new captain and everything. Well, I wish both teams the best. I still wonder why

Professor Penrose more or less forced me to sign up to audition. I'm not really... I've never actually been in a show before. I don't think this is going to go very well. But I'm afraid for what he'll do to my Muggle Studies mark if I don't show up, so I guess I'll give it a shot. The musical itself sounds very interesting, and I just hope he decides it'd be better if I'm not in the show. I'd really be okay with that - I'm sure I'd be happy to see it when it goes up. I don't have to actually participate in it, truly.

Is that normal? All I did was help out behind the scenes in the last show, and happen to be in his class, and he suddenly decided to pressure me to sign up. Does he do that a lot? It's not like I've ever even acted in the past.

Ah - Hogsmeade this weekend, right? That will be nice. I don't have any specific plans yet, but I know I'll be going. I wonder if anyone will

The eggs around the school would be really charming - if they weren't hexed. I'm disappointed in you, Hooper, MacFarlan, and Pepper (and any more of you whom I suspect were involved but cannot prove). It's very unkind to cause discomfort to people in such a way. Madame Pomfrey's been a bit stressed beyond her wits trying to keep up with the poor first- and second-years who've come to her with terrible rashes, boils, or worse.

So, I'm giving the three of you detention. Pepper, I suppose you'll have to serve yours once your detentions with Snape are through, but that's just as well; you can all serve them separately, with Filch (who is none too pleased either, I might add).

Next time you plan a post-Easter surprise for someone, it probably shouldn't include deliberate harm to other people. It's really inconsiderate and stupid.

I'm having a really terrible time trying to write this History of Magic essay. I can't concentrate today at all. Haven't been able to for the past few days, actually. Maybe it's cabin fever of sorts. But what can a person do about it, what with all the rain?

[Failed hexes were visible until the early afternoon, after which they became giant inkblots.]

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday. I went home to see my family, which was especially nice because I had remained at school over the winter hols. I spent a lot of time outside - it's getting warmer, you know, at least near London, and I think it's starting to get warmer here, just... more slowly. I can't wait. I don't necessarily intend to be outside all of the time, but after months and months of winter, I can't help but feel anxious about being inside. I also grow very tired of the colours. I'm done with brown and grey and ready for green again. It's much more refreshing. I know it's still raining a lot, but that will clear soon enough, and just imagine how much nicer everything will be, compared to a month or so ago.

Apparently there were Quidditch trials last week? I don't really follow Quidditch, and I obviously don't play, but I wish the best of luck to those of you who tried out. Melissa, did you go, or are you waiting for next year, maybe?

What a sad state of affairs.

If I catch anyone using a particular word, they can expect to have twenty points deducted immediately. Possibly detention. I'm glad this hasn't been an issue before, and I hope after the news cools it won't be a problem again.

The play seems to be coming along pretty well for the most part... I didn't really realise before now how much tension underlies the entire process, but I suppose when you get any large group of people together, especially ones who live together and know each other well, you're probably not going to be so lucky as to get a completely peaceful and friendly set. The best you can do is learn how to get along with people you don't like from it. And anyway, once you get on stage, you're supposed to be acting, so...

There's another in the spring, isn't there? A musical? That will be a sight to see.

I'm glad the Easter hols are coming up, though! I'll be very happy to go home to see my family. I miss them quite a lot.

Oh my god I want to Oh my god

When we find out who is responsible for tonight's chaos, please be aware that the punishment will be as severe as the intensity of the damage.

Which is to say, you should be praying you covered your tracks well enough because I might just murder you myself. Or, you should come forward now and get in far less trouble.

I just wanted to tell you it isn't strictly because of you that I'm upset. You're very nice and everything. Just - well, to be completely candid, I've never actually done that before, with anyone, and it's not exactly the way a person expects her first kiss to go. I hope you aren't offended - it isn't your fault.

Ever feel like you thought you knew someone, but they turned out to be completely different?

You know, despite being at times like one big collective home, Hogwarts is a really lonely place.

Oh. Valentine's is soon, isn't it.

It does seem like it's slowly getting warmer outside, though. That's a nice change.

Congratulations to everyone in the cast of the play! I'm sure you'll put together a lovely show.

I'm working backstage for the first time this year. Since our Muggle Studies class is handling the adaptation, I thought it'd be nice to get even further involved. I'm curious to see how shows get put together - I've only ever attended plays before, but I've never actually participated in one.

Also, congratulations to the Ravenclaw Quidditch team for the win over the weekend!

[Private to Prefects and Heads]
I don't know if any of you followed the particular argument in Angelina Johnson's journal, but it is, unfortunately, open to the public for all to see. During this argument, I stepped in to take five points from Meaghan McCormack for her use of unambiguously foul language (in a first year's journal, don't forget). Although I have to deal with the anger of the involved parties (who, in my opinion, are rather clouded by the emotions left over from the argument), I hope that I don't have to deal with the anger or disapproval of any of you. I stand by the five points I took from Gryffindor, and as you may note, I later took five more from Ravenclaw when Andrew MacFarlan took responsibility for exacerbating the fight. The points were taking for a very clear reason, for an offence previously established as against the rules and up for point-docking.

As you all know, Prefects who do their jobs are sometimes met with anger or opposition by the people who are breaking the rules. Nobody likes to be punished, even with something as trivial as a five-point loss, but if they've done something they're supposed to be punished for, we are in the wrong if we don't step up to fulfil the task the Headmaster assigned us to do. If we won't act as we should, then someone else should have our position.

I hope you will all support me, even if your friends complain. My friends are complaining, too. If the docked points are returned, it says that I was wrong to take points for swearing, and so, by extension, that foul language is acceptable and not open to punishment. We know that isn't true. We'd be letting down our positions if we said so. So please, I would be more than appreciative if you would stand behind me on this issue. Prefects are supposed to work as a team to help enforce the rules, and that is exactly what I have done. I would hate to see our friends' disapproval cause a lack of collective support within the Prefects themselves.

If I see any more collective attacks (or singular, really, that's almost just as bad) on a person in the journals, I'm going to take points. Not only is it hurtful, it's also immature. Does anyone even remember what the argument was about? And if so, does he or she realise how unimportant it is? Those of you who have never exaggerated or made generalised statements (particularly without intending any harm) can be the first to object, but I suspect that if that's the only criterion then we won't be seeing much.

Don't forget, just because there aren't professors policing what is written in these journals doesn't mean you can say whatever you want to someone else. Consider it as bad as yelling it in a packed corridor, but worse, because it becomes public record. If you can get points taken off for arguing in the corridors, you can lose points for it in the journals. Use a bit of that emotional sense I know you all have and think about whether you would want four or five or more people insulting you, even just for an offhand statement, in a public and permanent setting. Don't think that just because you can't see the person you're insulting when you do it makes it any less hurtful.

Gryffindor has already lost five points. I hope the rest of you decide to cap it right there.

Does anyone remember when the next Hogsmeade weekend is? I hope it's soon. I think those of us who stayed here over break deserve a chance to get out a bit, don't you?
